Children have chance to shine at Caerphilly Flower Festival

Wheelbarrows at Caerphilly Flower Festival

Children are being urged to show their creative side at this year’s Caerphilly Flower Festival with a decorative wheelbarrow competition.

Individuals and groups aged under 16 can enter their floral wheelbarrows to a public vote on the weekend of the festival on Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27.

The event is now in its eighth year and organisers say that record-breaking displays from all sectors are essential to make this year’s the best one yet.

The theme this year is celebration and poetry. Registrations to participate need to be completed by April 30.

The wheelbarrows will be displayed at the Caerphilly Tourist Information Centre during the flower festival.

A council spokeswoman said: “This really is a great way to get the children gardening and encourage them to use their imagination. A project to keep them happy for hours.”

The beginning of the flower festival coincides with the Olympic Torch relay through Caerphilly and the town’s first food festival.

To receive an application form and entry criteria for the flower festival, please email events@caerphilly.gov.uk or contact the council’s events team on 01443 866390.

I would urge all Caerffili schools to invest some time and enter this competition and be a part of the Cearffili Flower and Food Festival. The event has become bigger and bigger over the years and is a great boost to the Town bringing people in from all over South Wales.

Last year I spoke to a family from Bridgend and shared a Hufen Hapus ice cream with a couple from Cardiff who always visit on the Flower Festival as no such event their town or city.
