High winds and stormy weather over the weekend saw more than 30 trees come down across Caerphilly County Borough.

Caerphilly County Borough Council said staff had to respond to dozens of calls on Monday from residents.

One of the worst incidents happened in Rectory Road, Bedwas, where a parked car was crushed by a fallen tree. A large tree also came down in the grounds of Pontllanfraith council offices near Blackwood.

Mark Williams, the council’s head of public services said: “The team responded quickly and effectively to clear fallen trees across the county borough and I’d like to thank the staff for their efforts in very difficult conditions. I’m sure residents across the area appreciate their response too.”

Resident Mark Chataway, posting on the council’s Facebook page, said: “Thanks to the council staff. A big tree had blocked half the road from Ynysddu to Gelligroes on Sunday but when I came back at 4pm, it was gone. It’s quite impressive given the chaos everywhere from the wind.”
