A bird originally thought to be an emu and found wandering the fairways of Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel and Spa has been reunited with its owner.
The RSPCA said the bird was first spotted on the course in Maesycwmmer, near Blackwood, on Sunday with golfers witnessing people feeding it sandwiches.
It was originally thought to be an emu – a bird native to Australia and second only in size to the ostrich. The RSPCA later said that it it could be a rhea, which is of south American origin.
The animal welfare charity had earlier tried to capture the animal but with no success.
RSPCA officer Sophie Daniels said: “I was taken out in a golf buggy and I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the emu.
“The bird came over to feed from me but as soon as I tried to capture her, she kicked so hard I had to let her go.”
The bird was later picked up by owner Sean Hughes on Monday afternoon.
It had managed to escape a smallholding, situated a mile from the golf course, on Saturday.
Mr Hughes later quipped to the BBC: “They went down to Bryn Meadows to have a pedicure, a manicure and to have their eyebrows done and liked it so much they didn’t want to come back home.”

If my wife came back from a pedicure and a manicure looking like that……………..on second thoughts………
I’ll be in A&E as soon as she reads this 🙂
