Olympic Torch Relay: The route and associated road closures

Olympic Torch route through Caerphilly May 26

The route and associated road closures
St Martins Road, Nantgarw Road, Cardiff Road, Castle Street and Caerphilly Town Centre will all be closed to vehicles during the Olympic Torch Relay.

The relay is due to enter Caerphilly via Watford Road / St Martin’s Road at approximately 9.50am and will proceed through the town centre along Cardiff Road, Castle Street and Nantgarw Road. It is anticipated that the Olympic Torch Relay will be leaving Caerphilly, via Nantgarw Road by 10.30am.

Access for vehicles on to the designated route will not be permitted between approximately 9.40am and 10.40am. As the Olympic Torch Relay passes through the town centre, traffic restrictions will be removed to allow the passage of vehicles around the town centre as part of a ‘rolling’ road closure.

The council has said it is working closely with the Olympic organisers LOCOG, the BBC, transport providers and the Emergency Services to minimise the disruption around the town centre, but also to maximise the benefits this high profile event will bring to the town centre.

Caerphilly town will also be hosting its first ever food festival (see below for full details) and this too will involve road closures.

Cardiff Road and Castle Street will be closed between midnight on Friday May 25 and 10pm on Saturday May 26.

Crescent Road will also be limited due to the Olympic Sports Village and the Blue Peter Roadshow (again see below for full details). A one way system will be in operation along Crescent Road, from its junction with Crescent Road Car Park to the junction at Nantgarw Road between 9am and 6pm on Saturday.

Buses will still run on the day using Clive Street, Ludlow Street and the one way system on Crescent Road as an alternative route out of Caerphilly Town Centre.

Park and Ride facilities will also be available throughout the day.
