Ystrad Mynach hair stylists’ competition success

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:57, Friday May 25th, 2012.

The awards just keep on coming for the team at Spirit Hair in Ystrad Mynach

A team of hairstylists from Ystrad Mynach are celebrating after adding yet more trophies to their bulging collection.

Spirit Hair has had several of its staff gain success at the recent Welsh Hairdressing Championships and Salon Cymru 2012.

Stylist Kristian Johns, 18, took first place in the Trainee Blow-dry Award at Salon Cymru while at the Welsh Championships, Nikita Clothier took first place in the ‘Cut and Finish’ competition and ‘Men’s Hair’ and also gained second place in the styling competition called ‘Be Romantic’.

It was the first time either of them had entered a styling competition.

Janine O’Callaghan, co-owner of Spirit Hair, said: “We are so proud of the team. Competition work isn’t for everyone, it takes some guts to perform in a short space of time.

“It’s also about the commitment before the competition.”

Co-owner Donna Friend agreed. She said: “They put a lot of work in leading up to the competitions – a lot of work in their own time over evenings and weekends.

The recent success is just the tip of the iceberg for the Commercial Street salon.

Leading the multi-award-winning team at Spirit Hair is 24-year-old Darryn Pitman, who has won awards for his work over the last seven years. Colleagues told Caerphilly Observer that he is their “inspiration” at competitions.

Darryn said: “Competition success is down to the rest of the staff as well. They still come to support us and they’re with us all of the way.

Other staff to shine at the two recent awards were Charlotte Zerk, 25, who secured two fourth places at Salon Cymru and Lisa Arkley-Davies, 37, who came third in ‘Bridal Hair’ at the Welsh Championships.
