Islwyn MP Chris Evans has called on the UK Government to take the lead on plain packaging of cigarettes.
Mr Evans has backed charity Cancer Research UK’s campaign for packets without branding, design or logos.
The charity has said new research shows plain packaging of cigarette packs help put youngsters off smoking.
Mr Evans said: “Some eight out of ten smokers start by the age of 19 and evidence shows that many of these young people are enticed by marketing and branding of cigarette packs.
“By introducing plain packaging we can be the first European nation to legislate against tobacco marketing and remind people of the dangers of smoking.”
In April this year, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced consultation on introducing plain branded cigarette packets and said he was open minded on the plan.
Ho told The Times: “We don’t work in partnership with the tobacco companies because we are trying to arrive at a point where they have no business in this country.”
