Unemployment in Caerphilly County Borough has increased by 16% in the last 12 months.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, the number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance went from 5,279, in April 2011, to 6,127 in April 2012 – an increase of 848.

The Caerphilly Parliamentary constituency saw an increase of 13% from 2,506 to 2,831.

In the Islwyn Parliamentary constituency the numbers claiming jumped by 20% from 2,012 to 2,410.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans said the statistics from his constituency showed the policies of the UK Government were not working.

He said: “‘One year after the government’s Work Programme started we have seen the number of workless households in Islwyn increase by 20%.

“These figures are yet more bad news and further proof that this Government have absolutely no clue how to get people back to work.

“It is clear that the Government’s work programmes are in complete disarray.”
