News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:09, Wednesday June 13th, 2012.

The owner of an off licence in Penyrheol has been prosecuted for selling alcohol to underage teens.

As the licensee of the Top Stores, in Heol Aneurin, Penyrheol, Sukhjit Sandhu admitted one charge of selling to a person under the age of 18 at Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court on May 31.

He was ordered to pay a fine of £135, together with prosecution costs to the council of £258.42 and a £15 victim surcharge.

Two 16-year-old test purchase volunteers were served with four cans of Fosters lager, during a test purchase operation in August 2011 by Trading Standards team.

The employee who served the two young people was dealt with immediately following the test purchase, and was issued with a Penalty Notice for Disorder of £80.

Cllr Dave Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services said: “Our Trading Standards team work continuously to ensure that alcohol does not get into the hands of our young people, and I hope this successful prosecution will send out a clear and direct message to the very small minority of licence holders who fail to take their licensing responsibilities seriously, that they will not get away with it.”
