Explore Sirhowy Valley Cycle Route for National Bike Week

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Monday June 18th, 2012.

Transport charity Sustrans is urging cyclists to try out the improved Sirhowy Valley Cycle Route during this week’s National Bike Week.

The Sirhowy Valley Cycle Route which is part of route 47 of the National Cycle Network has been revamped following a major landslip and now has improved drainage and a resufaced path.

Caerphilly Country Borough Council and Sustrans have been working to improve the Sirhowy Valley Cycle Route as part of a series of schemes creating an additional 100km of new walking and cycling paths across the Welsh valleys.

A new walking and cycling link between Parc Cwm Darran and Fochriw will be the next scheme to be completed later this month.

Rachel Lister, Scheme Manager for Sustrans, said: “Bike Week is a great time to get out and explore the exciting National Cycle Network. Over half of car journeys are less than five miles and the summer is the perfect time to swap this for an easy 30 minute bike ride for both commuting and recreation.”

Cllr Tom Williams, the council’s cabinet member for highways, transportation and engineering said: “We have worked alongside our colleagues at Sustrans to expand and improve cycle routes across the county borough, and I would encourage residents to embrace the opportunity to take in the many breathtaking sights that Caerphilly county borough has to offer – cycling is an ideal way to access these sights.”
