Luxury bed firm expands Welsh base in Treforest

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Thursday June 28th, 2012.

The new factory of a company that specialises in making luxury beds has been officially opened by First Minister Carwyn Jones.

Savior Beds has developed a site on the Gellihirion Industrial Estate in Treforest, moving their current operation from Taffs Well where they have been based for 14 years.

Savoir branded beds were first created for the Savoy Hotel in London in 1905. The company is described as the producer of the world’s most luxurious beds. They create bespoke beds starting from £20,000.

The Welsh operation began in 1997 when a co-operative of workers who were made redundant from the Rest Assured bed factory in the Rhondda formed ‘The Welsh Bed Company’ who supplied handmade beds to Savoir Beds as a subcontractor before formally becoming part of the Savoir Beds company in 2005.

The new larger factory at Gellihirion Industrial Estate employs 36, mainly drawn from the local Rhondda Cynon Taff and Caerphilly area. The First Minister officially opened the factory before seeing firsthand the work of the staff.

The First Minister said: “I am delighted to be here to open this new factory and proud to have this prestigious bed maker in Wales, grown from an indigenous company with unique skilled workmanship, providing valued jobs in the area.

“I have seen for myself the craftsmanship required to produce beds to such an exceptional standard. It is good that these traditional skills are being retained and developed here in Wales to create a truly world-class product.”
