Workshops are being held across Wales as part of the Welsh Government’s consultation on the draft Human Transplantation (Wales) Bill which will introduce a soft opt-out system of organ donation in Wales.
Under a soft opt-out system, unless a person registers either a wish to be a donor (opt-in) or not to be a donor (opt-out), their consent to donation will be deemed to have been given. However, a person’s family will still have a key role to play in discussions about organ donation. It is anticipated the new system will come into effect in 2015.
The consultation was launched by the Health Minister Lesley Griffiths on June 18. It will run for 12 weeks until September 10. During this time, a number of workshops aimed at gathering views on the draft legislation will be held as follows:
- July 9 – 2pm to 4.30 pm – Margam Building, Swansea University, Singleton Park, Swansea
- July 11 – 2pm to 4.30 pm – Pembrokeshire College, Haverfordwest
- July 12- 2pm to 4.30pm – Orbit Business Centre, Merthyr Tydfil
