A Caerphilly fundraising group, who has been together for 26 years, has raised £400,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Caerphilly Committee was established in 1986 after the group got together to raise funds for the cancer charity.
The group has 15 members and has raised the sizeable sum through numerous coffee mornings, dinners, carol concerts and collections.
The committee also continues to enjoy support from many local businesses including The Square Cafe, Blackwood, Tesco and Caerphilly Garden Centre to name just a few.
Margaret Bowen, committee chair said: “All the team work really hard and we have lots of support from people in the community. We wouldn’t have been able to reach this total without their continued loyalty. We are all looking forward to continuing with our fundraising efforts and raising even more money for local people affected by cancer.”
In 2011 Macmillan Cancer Support was able to help over 30 people in Caerphilly with more than £10,000 in grants to assist with additional costs such as additional heating bills, or travel to and from hospital appointments. The groups fundraising efforts have also contributed to the new cancer unit at Prince Charles Hospital and support other initiatives across South East Wales.
