Islwyn Community Credit Union has celebrated lending £1 million to families.

The credit union was set up in 1998 to provide affordable credit and saving facilities for the community.

Former Islwyn MP Lord Don Touhig and his successor Chris Evans have visited the offices of the credit union recently to help celebrate the milestone.

Mr Evans and Lord Touhig met with Gareth Chiplin – a volunteer of the Islwyn Community Credit Union who helped up a credit union at Trinant Primary School.

Mr Evans, who recently joined Islwyn Community Credit Union said: “I was delighted to join Don in celebrating the continued success of Islwyn Community Credit Union. When we were given the opportunity to donate money by a polling company after completing one of their surveys, we both decided on the Islwyn Community Credit Union.

“This is because credit unions help prevent families being driven into the hands of illegal lenders or loan sharks. They are safe places to save money as they are owned and controlled by their members.

“Lending £1 million is a real milestone and I was pleased to meet Gareth and hear about the good work that he is doing at Trinant Primary School. Getting young people into good saving habits will help them manage their finances in future. It is clear that Islwyn Community Credit Union is going from strength to strength.”

Mr Evans and Lord Touhig each donated £75.
