Caerphilly Council freezes price of school dinners

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:22, Thursday July 26th, 2012.

The price of school dinners has been frozen by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

It is the third year the council, now controlled by Labour, has not increased the price of a school meal. The previous two price freezes were brought in under Plaid Cymru.

The price of a primary school meal will remain at £1.80 and a secondary school meal will cost £2.05. The local authority has insisted the quality of the meals will remain the same and that local suppliers will be used where possible.

The council has also stated that primary schools will be compliant with new Welsh Government nutritional guidelines for school meals by September this year. Secondary schools will meet the guidelines by September 2013.

Cllr Dave Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “The authority is committed to providing tasty, nutritious and exciting meals for our school children.

“With many budgetary restraints, it would be assumed that lower quality products are used in order to keep prices low. However, we can assure parents that all food and drink available to their children at school are first class and meet the specifications outlined by Welsh Government.”
