Caerphilly Council to digitise 175 years of birth, death and marriage records

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Tuesday August 14th, 2012.

Records of births, deaths and marriages stretching back 175 years are to be digitised by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

The project to digitise more than 600,000 records will back-capture the information from over 175 years in the county borough area up to the middle of the 1990s.

The project will create two full-time jobs at the local authority.

Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “This new system will help to bring history into the present and enable our registration services to provide an enhanced service.”

Cllr Christine Forehead, cabinet member for HR and Governance welcomed the creation of two new jobs.

She said: “At the council we are committed to providing employment opportunities. These posts will enable the successful applicants to learn new skills using up-to-the-minute software.”

The council has said the computer indexing of the records will allow a more effective and efficient search process for registration staff and will provide a better service for public searches.
