Charity music festival Megaday, held on the bank holiday weekend, has raised £15,000 for Velindre Hospital.

Despite a generally wet weekends, the bank holiday sun came out and attracted a bumper crowd to the festival held at Caerphilly RFC’s Virginia Park.

Now in its 18th year, Megaday started in 1995 and raises money for Velindre Cancer Appeal in memory of two local musicians, Andrew Nichols and Paul Grahame, who sadly lost their lives to cancer.

The weekend kicked-off on Friday night with ‘House Dance Night’ with local DJs Keeno, Cliffy and Dusty playing at Pulsars nightclub in Caerphilly.

On Sunday, more than a thousand people turned out see twelve local bands perform on the main Megaday stage. From pop to punk, there was something for all tastes. The night was headlined by Jaded in a line up which included Foo Fighters and Tom Jones tribute acts.

The festival ended in an explosive and emotional finale with a professional fireworks display which was accompanied by a song Paul Grahame (PG) recorded especially for Megaday just before he died.

Organisers estimate that this year’s event has raised around £15,000 for Velindre hospital to add to the £220,000 it has raised over the last 18 years.

Steve Sullivan, one of the Megaday organisers, said: “It was a fantastic day enjoyed by everyone who attended. Megaday is always a special weekend for all involved, we’d like to thank everyone who helped, played and attended, you all did Paul and Andrew proud.”
