Judges should have the right to stop televised trials to prevent sensationalising justice, Islwyn MP Chris Evans has argued.
The UK Government is currently considering whether to allow some sentencing in English and Welsh courts to be televised.
Speaking during Justice Questions in the House of Commons, Mr Evans warned that inviting cameras in courts could lead to the sensationalism seen during the OJ Simpson and Dr Conrad Murray trials.
Mr Evans, a member of the Justice Select Committee said: “As we have seen recently with the trial of Conrad Murray in the US – when a camera is allowed in a courtroom it can cause a media circus.
“If we are to begin televising court proceedings here in the UK we have to ensure that judges have the right to stop recordings that are sensationalising trials.”
