Gwent Police looking to recruit cadets

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Tuesday September 25th, 2012.

Gwent Police Cadets are currently recruiting teenage members.

The force is to begin a five-month training programme from January 2013 for cadets to work alongside local Neighbourhood Policing Teams.

The cadet scheme is designed to develop youngsters by giving them valuable experience in dealing with members of the public and to give them a thorough understanding of issues affecting their local communities.

Inspector Chris O’Driscoll co-ordinates the Gwent Police cadets.

He said: “The cadets initiative presents youngsters with a great opportunity to get out and about within their communities and really make a difference in providing support to local police and reassurance to residents as well as experiencing lots of different things and meeting new friends.

“We are asking parents whether they think their teenagers would be interested in joining. I would say if your teenager is enthusiastic and committed to the area that you live, then this would be a wonderful opportunity for them to make a real difference.”

Teenagers interested in applying need to be a Year 11 student who is 16 by August 31, 2013 and would need to remain on the scheme until they reach 18 years and six months.

The police cadets are aged between 16 and 18-years-old and will be taking part in a two-year scheme aimed at carrying out voluntary work within their local communities.
