A 34-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital after a road crash between the van he was driving and a HGV lorry.

The accident happened on a stretch of road between Penyrheol and Abertridwr near the entrance to Bryn Siriol.

A Gwent Police spokesman said in a statement said: “Officers were called to a road traffic collision on Bryn Siriol, Caerphilly, at approximately 2.50pm today (Tuesday September 25).

“The collision involved an articulated Volvo HGV and a white Ford Transit flatbed van. The driver of the flatbed van, aged 34, from the Caerphilly area, was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with injuries to his arms, legs and pelvis. The man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“The road has been closed in both directions while emergency services are at the scene.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101 or the collision investigation unit on 01633 642404.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council set up a ‘Rest Centre’ at Caerphilly Leisure Centre for pupils unable to get home because of the road closure. Pupils and students affected were from Cardinal Newman, St Helens and Ystrad Mynach College.

Update: The road was reopened at 6pm.
