Caerphilly County pupils collect 2.5 tonnes of electrical waste

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Thursday October 4th, 2012.

Pupils from across from four schools in Caerphilly County Borough have collected 2.54 tonnes in waste electrical equipment in a bid to scoop £3,000 worth of prizes for their school.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Rhymney Comprehensive School, St Cenydd Comprehensive School, and Cwmcarn High School teamed up with the council to compete against schools from nine other local authorities in an attempt to collect the most weight per pupil of waste electrical items.

Cllr Gaynor Oliver, Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, attended the first day of the WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) Reuse Recycle 2012 event at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni recently. Pupils and members of the community were invited to bring along their old, unused or unwanted electrical items.

Cllr Dave Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “Teaching our students about recycling will ensure that they are aware of their environmental responsibilities, encouraging them to recycle and reuse in their everyday lives. The prizes available will make a great difference to the school that wins, providing impressive electrical equipment as additional teaching resources.”

The school that collected the most items on their allocated day will win up to £1,000 of electrical prizes, plus the three runners-up will receive £333 of prizes for their school. In addition the overall winner from ten local authorities will win a further £2000 of prizes.

Items which are reusable will be resold at a reduced price at the Community Furniture Enterprise in Rhymney.
