New name sought for merged Glamorgan and Newport university

Views and suggestions are being sought on what to call a merged Glamorgan and Newport university.

The University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport, announced plans to merge in July this year.

The new university will be of a similar size to Cardiff University.

Glamorgan and Newport have appointed Cardiff-based company Beaufort Research to conduct its consultation with stakeholders on the merger.

The universities are looking for a name which reflects the geographical spread of the new institution as well as its focus on modern, relevant education.

People can have their say and propose ideas by visiting www.newport.ac.uk and completing a survey.

Professor Stephen Hagen, acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales, Newport, said: “Negotiations with the University of Glamorgan are progressing positively and we are now at a point where we need to think about the right name for the new University.

“All along, Newport’s position has been guided by ensuring that our work in Gwent over the last 170 years is further strengthened and our impact on local people and communities is enhanced.

“We are looking for something that reflects the historical strengths of the existing universities but will also be easy to recognise and help us to compete on a national and international level on behalf of Wales.

“Coming up with the right name is incredibly important and both universities are very keen that local people have their say on this. Over the next couple of weeks I hope that as many people as possible take the opportunity to help us with this process.”
