A team of 30 local volunteers from Ystrad Mynach College and Groundwork Caerphilly helped give a dull day care centre a colourful makeover.

Ystrad Mynach Day Centre, which provides adults with disabilities access to a wide range of community-based activities, was a beneficiary of paint company Dulux’s Let’s Colour Project, which donates paint for community schemes.

The colourful design for the project was chosen and developed by users of the centre, which has over 350 visitors a week, many of whom have learning disabilities and rely on the centre to develop skills and independence through its various activities such as fitness classes, arts and crafts and gardening.

Hywell Abbot, from the day centre, said: “We’re very proud to have been chosen as one of the Let’s Colour UK projects. The transformation has not only brightened up the Ystrad Mynach Day Centre, but has helped to reflect the vibrant activity that takes place within this community hub.”

Letty Edwards, marketing director of Dulux, said: “We’re proud to have been able to help make a real difference to the Ystrad Mynach Day Centre community, both physically and metaphorically.

“Our aim is to create brighter futures in communities across the UK by calling on people to make a tangible difference to the place in which they live and work, and leave behind a social legacy that will continue to motivate and inspire many others for years to come.”

Cllr Robin Woodyatt, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for social services, said: “This project is unique because of the client inclusion demonstrated, allowing service users to feel involved in the process. It is an incredible example of what can be achieved through partnership working and I’d like to thank everyone involved for improving the appearance of a building which serves the community so well.”
