Caerphilly AM welcomes Ystrad Mynach station improvements

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Monday November 12th, 2012.

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert has welcomed plans to improve disabled access at Ystrad Mynach train station.

The improvements will include a step-free access lift on the station’s footbridge, while the existing shelter and ticket office will be improved and relocated.

The scheme is part of the Welsh Government’s National Station Improvement Plan.

Mr Cuthbert said: “I’m glad that many years of campaigning by local residents and station users has paid off, and that the disabled access improvements that the station badly needs will now finally come to fruition.

“For too long, disabled rail users had to use a lengthy detour to access the station’s southbound platform – some have even had to travel up to Bargoed station before crossing platforms to return in the opposite direction!

“This shows that the Welsh Government is listening to local people and rail users who have been calling for such work to be done. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to deliver on this for the people of Ystrad Mynach.”

The improvements have also been welcomed by local passengers.

Gareth Williams, who lives in Bryn Mynach, said: “As a stroke survivor, and as someone who also suffers from cataracts, these improvements to access arrangements will be of enormous benefit when I want to travel by train down to Caerphilly or Cardiff.”
