Antisocial behaviour in Caerphilly County Borough between this year’s Halloween and Bonfire Night was down by 30% compared to last year.
Between October 30 and November 6, the number of antisocial behaviour incidents reported to Gwent Police fell from 260 in 2011 to 182.
The number of antisocial behaviour calls on Halloween fell by 43% while Bonfire Night showed a reduction of 33%.
On October 31 and November 5, the areas that showed the biggest decrease were Bedwas on Halloween with a decrease of 88%, and Ystrad Mynach on Bonfire Night with a decrease of 83%.
Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and lifelong services, said: “It’s rewarding to see a reduction in the number of anti-social incidents across the borough after the hard work and coordinated efforts of police officers, community support officers, youth workers and other volunteers.”
Sergeant Rob Davies, of Gwent Police, said: “Halloween and Bonfire Night are traditionally busy periods for the police and we are pleased to see that the our work with partner organisations has helped see a dramatic decrease in reported anti-social behaviour in our communities.
“Along with our extra targeted patrols, this year we worked closely with Caerphilly Council, shop keepers, fire service, trading standards departments, community groups, schools and youth organisations to keep incidents of antisocial behaviour to a minimum.”
He added: “Our targeted campaign ‘Operation BANG (Be A Nice Guy)’ reached those who could be effected by antisocial behaviour and urged youngsters to behave responsibly.”
This year, schools and youth organisations in Gwent were also shown a short film documenting the experience of one Blackwood resident who was left frightened after being a victim of antisocial behaviour.
In the film, 84-year-old Cess Davies from Blackwood explains the way his encounter with a small group of youths made him feel, and asks young people to think about the impact that their behaviour has on elderly residents.
