Primary school pupils to help at Aberbargoed Grasslands National Nature Reserve

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Friday November 23rd, 2012.

Primary school pupils are to help plant a new hedgerow at Aberbargoed Grasslands National Nature Reserve (NNR) as part of next week’s national tree week.

Pupils from Markham Primary, Cefn Fforest Primary, Ysgol Bro Sannan and Aberbargoed Primary will each take part in sessions helping to plant a number of trees. They will also take part in green-fingered games and activities focused on the importance of trees to our environment.

The hedgerow will be planted near to the Education Centre at the site, where many developments have already been successfully implemented including a pond and butterfly flower beds. The improvements to the area encourage wildlife to thrive and also provides residents and visitors with an interesting and attractive place to enjoy the outdoors.

Cllr Ken James, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and sustainable development, said: “Since Aberbargoed Grasslands was designated as the first National Nature Reserve in an urban setting back in June of this year, many improvements have been made around the Education Centre at the site.

“Planting this hedgerow will further enhance these improvements and we can continue with our commitment to providing beautiful and interesting green open spaces for our residents and visitors to the county borough to enjoy.”
