A Caerphilly-born darts player is hoping to break a world record to raise cash for Wales Air Ambulance.
Steve Davies, 40, and work colleague Richie Williams, from Barry, are hoping to break the record for the ‘World’s longest singles darts match’.
The duo, who work in IT development at the Principality Building Society, will play continually for 35 hours, with just a five–minute break for every full hour of darts playing.
The marathon attempt will begin at 8am on Friday June 10 at Riley’s Snooker Hall in Cardiff and will raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance – the Principality’s charity of the year.
Steve said: “The current world record is 32 hours and 25 minutes and is held by two ladies from Stafford. We certainly have a mean task ahead of us but it’s for a great cause.
“I am a huge fan of watching darts on television and I have even been to the world championships as a spectator. I got into playing darts when I was at University – we had a board set up in halls of residence and eventually I started to compete in the weekly sports bar competition at the Student’s Union.
“Since then I have always had a dart board in the garage and although I haven’t played for 35 hours straight, I am determined to complete this special challenge, especially in the charity’s 10th anniversary year.
“More than a third of Principality staff voted to raise money for Wales Air Ambulance this year. The Welsh-based charity relies purely on public support to help keep it flying and we’re hoping to get as many people as possible to support us with a donation.
“Anyone can make a donation to the charity by paying money over the counter at any Principality branch across Wales, quoting the charity of the year account and the world darts record attempt.”
Wales Air Ambulance needs to raise more than £5 million a year to operate the service, with the charity raising all the funds required to finance the day-to-day operation, with each mission costing an average of £1,200.
The organisation operates three helicopters and emergency crews from bases at Swansea, Caernarfon and Welshpool.
