Gwent Police has welcomed new police cadets in Caerphilly last week following a recruitment drive at the end of 2012.
The 22 new cadets are all between 15 and 16-years old and will remain in their volunteer roles until they are at least 18.
Other areas have also welcomed new cadets bringing the total to 92.
Newport has 28 cadets, Monmouthshire has 16 while there are 14 in Torfaen and 12 in Blaenau Gwent.
The cadets, who have their own uniform, will meet at least once a week to take part in different activities. This includes attending workshops and talks to get an understanding of the work of a police force, including the roles of dog handlers, roads policing, scenes of crime and CID.
They also receive inputs from partner organisations including local trading standards officers, alcohol workers and drug workers, about the work that they do with Gwent Police.
The new cadets will take part in first aid training, and will learn about using a police radio, as well as team working.
Once the cadets have received their training, they will be allocated to work with a local Neighbourhood Policing Team. They will assist the teams with local crime prevention schemes, helping to deliver leaflets and speaking to local residents and businesses about staying safe, particularly in areas that have experienced recent crime.
They will be attending local events with the Neighbourhood Policing Teams to speak to members of the public and take part in community engagement.
They will also be helping to carry out speed monitoring in areas where residents have raised concerns about the speeds of vehicles.
The new cadets were formally welcomed to the force by Chief Constable Carmel Napier and the Police and Crime Commissioner Ian Johnston last week.
They also thanked the 44 police cadets that joined in 2011 and are now leaving their roles, for all of the work they have taken part in over the last two years.
Inspector Chris O’Driscoll, who co-ordinates the Gwent Police cadets programme, said: “Becoming a Gwent Police cadet presents young people with an opportunity to learn new skills as well as making a difference to their local communities by supporting officers and reassuring residents. They learn all about the different work that takes place within Gwent Police, as well as making new friends. Whilst many of the cadets may aspire to become a police officer when they are older, some just want an opportunity to broaden their horizons and give something back to their local community.”
