Snow update from Caerphilly Council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:04, Monday January 21st, 2013.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has revealed its gritting team have spread more than £90,000 of the substance covering a distance of 5,000 miles since Friday.

It has spread around 1,400 tonnes of grit salt since Friday and has another 5,500 tonnes in storage. The council has said its highways teams have been working around the clock to clear roads and have been doing their best to clear side roads and lanes.

Cllr Harry Andrews, leader of the council, said: “We were well prepared to respond to the difficult weather conditions over the last few days and it is clear that our investment in equipment and grit supplies has made a significant impact.

“I would like to thank staff for their efforts and I would also like to thank residents for their patience and understanding. Our priority now is to get back to business and catch up on missed refuse/recycling collections etc.”

A number of dialysis patients were helped by council staff to ensure they had access to their treatment and staff came to the rescue of a heavily pregnant woman in Abertysswg on Sunday evening who was unable to get her car off the property.

Refuse and Recycling vehicles have been sent out today and will collect as normal where it is safe to do so.

The severe conditions on Friday meant that all collections were cancelled. The council has advised residents to put their bins out today ready for collection in the week.
