Localised flooding a possibility during thaw, says Environment Agency Wales

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:31, Friday January 25th, 2013.

Environment Agency Wales is asking people to remain vigilant for localised flooding as further heavy rainfall is forecast over the weekend.

Following the heavy rainfall forecast for Friday evening, further bands of persistent rain are expected to reach south east and mid Wales late Saturday afternoon continuing overnight into Sunday.

Milder temperatures will result in a rapid thaw, which may contribute to excess surface water.

The rain will clear east during the early hours of Sunday morning but further heavy showers are expected to follow later in the day and throughout the evening.

The unsettled weather is likely to continue into the early part of next week.

These conditions are likely to result in excess water on roads and flooding from blocked drains and streams.

Rivers could rise in response to the rainfall and flood alerts may be issued but the likelihood of flooding from larger rivers remains low.

Environment Agency Wales is advising people to take extra care on the roads as driving conditions could be hazardous.

People are advised to keep a close eye on the forecast over the weekend and listen in to local news updates for details of any disruption in their area.
