The Scouting movement in the Caerphilly district has appointed a new commissioner.

Miranda Holmes will take on the role for the Caerphilly, Rhymney Valley and Islwyn district on March 1.

Ms Holmes has been volunteering in Scouting since March 2001 when she started as an Assistant Cub Scout Leader at 7th Caerphilly.

Over the past 12 years Ms Holmes has been a Group Scout Leader, Trainer and more recently a Deputy Area Commissioner for Mid Glamorgan (Caerphilly, RCT, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend).

Dozens of youngsters from six-year-old Beaver Scouts to Scouts helped in choosing Ms Holmes as the new district commissioner.

Local businessman Derek Thomas and police Inspector Gareth Lintern also helped with the selection.

Ms Holmes said “I am really excited to take on the challenge of developing scouting locally. I want girls and boys locally to be offered the best programme by their leaders, and will do all I can to support this.”

Will the new commissioner start to use bilingual stamps at Christmas, or is that beyond her power? I refuse to use the service while something supposedly based at Caerffili refuses to use any Welsh at all. The Post Office are hardly good, but they put the scouts to shame.
