Dog Control Orders to be implemented in May

Dog Control Orders banning the animals from enclosed children’s play areas and Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) across Caerphilly County Borough will come into force from May this year.

The council’s cabinet this week approved the plans.

A public consultation which ended in September 2012 saw 92% of respondents back the ban over concerns of dog mess.

Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “We already have a zero-tolerance approach to tackling the irresponsible minority of dog owners who do not take their responsibilities seriously.

“Implementing the Dog Control Orders has provided us with an additional tool in fighting the problem that affects so many residents. We all deserve to live in a clean, beautiful and unspoiled environment and I am pleased that our residents have been listened to, and have been vital decision makers in this process.”

The introduction of the Dog Control Orders means that, under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, offenders will receive a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 or a fine of up to £1,000 if the matter is taken before the courts.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is currently running campaign to highlight the problem of dog mess not being picked up by some dog owners.
