Family events to explain welfare reform

A series of family fun days have been organised to help explain how upcoming changes in the welfare system could impact on Caerphilly County Borough residents.

Communities First and Families First have arranged the fun days. Children’s entertainment will be available including face painting, a magician and the chance to meet favourite TV characters in the flesh; but while the kids are having fun, parents can use the opportunity to get vital information about upcoming welfare reforms, financial advice plus much more.

The events which are designed to engage families and raise awareness will be attended by a number of organisations including Supporting People, Housing Advice, Citizens Advice Bureau, Credit Unions and the Family Information Service. There will also be help to get online, support to get employment and ideas for low cost activities for families to enjoy.

The first event will be held at Ael Y Bryn Community Centre, Rhymney on Tuesday February 26 between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. Transport can be arranged if necessary.

Events will also be held at:
Tuesday February 26 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm, Ael y Bryn Community Centre, Rhymney
Thursday February 28 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm, White Rose Resource Centre
Monday March 4 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm, Ty Sign Primary School
Friday March 8 – 3.30pm to 5.30pm, Trinant Primary School
Thursday March 14 – 4pm to 6pm, Bargoed Community Centre, Gilfach Estate
Monday March 18 – 9am to 1pm, Penryheol Community Centre
Saturday March 23 – 2pm to 5pm, Blackwood Miners’ Institute

Cllr Ken James, cabinet member for regeneration, sustainable development and planning, said: “The forthcoming Welfare Reform changes, imposed by the UK Government, will be affecting many families across the county borough, and these events will enable residents to be fully armed with all the information you need to be able to manage these changes.

“It is also a great opportunity for families to spend time together and get tips on low cost activities for all the family to enjoy.”
