A loyal funeral director has clocked up 30 years’ service with The Co-operative Funeralcare.

Funeral director Paul Matthews, 48, who is based at the funeral home in Caerphilly, started with the then independent Ivor Evans Funeral Directors in the town in September 1982 as a driver and bearer.

Two months later the business was acquired by the former CWS, which subsequently became The Co-operative Funeralcare.

In 1986 Paul gained his Diploma in Funeral Directing from the NAFD (National Association of Funeral Directors) and was promoted to Funeral Director.

Gail Williams, Manager of The Co-operative Funeralcare, said: “Paul has been a valued member of the team and of the local community for 30 years. He is a highly committed, extremely hard working and dedicated funeral director.”

“Since joining The Co-operative Funeralcare, I have never looked back,” said Paul. “I get a great deal of satisfaction helping families during some of the most difficult times of their lives.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes over the last 30 years. When I started funerals were all very similar, whereas nowadays people want to make them different to reflect the life of their loved one.”
