Volunteers have raised £500 towards the £1 million target to turn the former Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital site into a community centre.
“Every little helps” was the right phrase, but it was the wrong supermarket as the volunteers did bag packing at Morrisons in Caerphilly town.
Charity the Caerphilly Miners’ Centre for the Community is raising the funds to take out a 99 year lease on the original Beeches building at the former hospital site.
As part of fundraising efforts, the charity is asking people to donate £8.
The Caerphilly Miners 8 fundraising campaign reflects the donations made by the miners in the establishment of the ‘Beeches’ hospital in 1923. Miners from 29 local pits put aside 6d of their 12s 6d weekly wages to fund the hospital, the campaign reflects the monetary equivalent from the people of Caerphilly, £8.
Volunteers which helped with the bag packing session included Sue Burgess, Lorna Jones, Rodney Jones, Ita Libreri, Marilyn Thomas and her husband, Ray Grace, Jeff Cuthbert AM, Gwyneth Smart, Chris Cooper, Lauren Cripps and Cath Lewis.
Good luck to them I hope they get this facility for the community.
It states:

Oakdale miners contributed to their stute and hospital but the stute has been given to st fagans and the hospital sold at auction for housing, I think the community should be given a building to compensate for their loss for the benefit of all the community.
Sorry, I dont agree we have lost an A and E hopspital and now in effect have to go to the Royal Gwent or Prince Charles. The miners paid their weekly contribution for a hospital in Caerphilly, not that their descendants have to travel to Newport or Merthyr, we was robbed.
