Coleg Gwent students compete in national trainee contest

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:55, Monday January 31st, 2011.

Coleg Gwent students have today been competing in the first round of the 2011 Association of Hairdressers and Therapists UK Trainee Competition.

This year’s first round event was held at Newport Centre where students battled it out in the regional heats for a place in the national AHT final.

Hoping to secure a place in the national final were around 80 Coleg Gwent students from its Crosskeys and City of Newport campuses.

As well as students from hair and make-up, budding theatrical make-up artists from Crosskeys Campus also took part in a range of competitions including hairdressing, make-up, face painting, body painting and nail art.

David Bassett, chairman of the AHT Wales Area, said: “The AHT is an organisation that works with colleges and training centres to set and improve standards of training within the industry of hair, beauty and holistics.

“We are delighted to have so many entries this year.”

The winners from the regional round will win a place in the National Finals in Blackpool on March 13 and March 14.
