Islwyn MP hits out at pension age rise for women

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Wednesday June 1st, 2011.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has spoken out over UK Government plans to increase the state pension age for women.

The Government wants to introduce a universal state pension age of 66 by 2020

Women born between December 6 1953 and October 5 1954 will have to wait an extra 18 months before they can claim state pension while those born between March 6 1954 and April 5 1954 will have to wait an extra two years.

Labour MP Mr Evans said: “It is outrageous that the Government is forcing women to make significant changes to their retirement plans at such short notice.

“The lack of warning of these changes means many women who have spent years preparing for retirement are having their plans thrown in the air.

“It is simply not acceptable for the government to move the goalposts at this late stage. This is an example of yet another broken promise from the Tory-led Government.”
