Blackwood Poundstretcher fire latest: Timpson shop to be assessed

Safety inspectors are to decide whether the Timpson store on Blackwood High Street will be demolished following a huge fire a fortnight ago.

Fire crews were called to the town’s Poundstretcher store at 2am on Wednesday May 1 to battle a huge blaze which had taken its grip on the store.

The fire caused so much damage that the building had to be pulled down after it was deemed unsafe.

Tomorrow, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Building Control Officers will inspect the next door Timpson shop to examine if the building can be saved.

A council spokesperson said: “As a result of the continued assessment of the site, Woodbine Road will remain closed to traffic. This closure is likely to last until Tuesday May 21, but Council Officers will do their utmost to make the site safe and re-open Woodbine Road as soon as possible.”

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire. All eight have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
