Waste transfer plan for Trehir

Caerphilly County Borough Council will today consider outline plans for a new waste transfer plant in the county.

Councillors will decide whether or not to give the scheme the go ahead to be built at the Trehir landfill site near Caerphilly.

The waste transfer station would act as a starting point for waste to be bulked together before it’s loaded on to larger vehicles ready to be taken for processing outside the area.

No on-site treatment of waste would take place at the facility.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This is an important project for the council and fits alongside the other key partnership schemes that we are currently involved with to help improve our waste management.

“We appreciate that developments of this nature can be controversial and we are keen to ensure that any proposed scheme would be clean, green and efficient in order to maximise our opportunities to sort waste in the most effective way possible.”

If the scheme is agreed Trehir could be operational by 2012.

The former St Ives printing works at Dyffryn Business Park, near Ystrad Mynach, was bought by the council in 2005 for £5.2 million.

It was to be turned into a recycling centre but plans for the development fell through.

The site could now be sold on the open market.
