Aberbargoed Library reopens following £90,000 refurbishment

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Tuesday May 28th, 2013.

Aberbargoed Library has reopened after a £90,000 refurbishment.

The library now hosts a range of audio books and DVDs, public internet PCs and photocopying facilities. It is also home to Flying Start Health Visitors, who will manage the new play area to the rear of the building.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “I am so pleased that we have been able to ensure the regeneration of Aberbargoed Library, providing the community with an important facility for socialising and learning.

“The new fixtures allow residents of all ages and abilities to make the most of the digital world that we live in, with free public internet access complementing the other services available at the facility.”

Cllr Keith Reynolds, Deputy Leader and Aberbargoed ward member, added: “I, along with my fellow ward member Cllr Alan Higgs, am delighted that the library has once again opened its doors to the residents of Aberbargoed.

“The impressive refurbishment has ensured the facility will remain a popular venue for members of the community to socialise and enjoy all the library has to offer.”

Labour councillors decided to reopen the library after it was closed in March last year by the then ruling Plaid Cymru administration.

After winning the local elections in Caerphilly County Borough in May, Labour cabinet members decided to approve plans to modernise the library, situated in Pant Street.

Plaid had closed the library arguing that millions of pounds had been spent already at Bargoed’s Hanbury Chapel library development.

Annual operating costs of £33,000 for the reopened library, the council has said, will be funded from an anticipated budget surplus for 2012/13.
