Octopus in Caerphilly Castle moat damaged by vandals

The octopus in Caerphilly Castle moat

An octopus made of scrap metal in Caerphilly Castle moat has been damaged by vandals.

The artwork, installed by the town’s Y Galeri, was attacked on Monday evening at around 6.30pm, according to local eye witnesses.

Jan Pennell, artistic director at the St Fagan’s Street art gallery, said there had been reports of a person in the moat damaging the octopus.

CCTV is currently being looked at by council operators, although the police have not yet been called.

Rhondda sculptor Barry Lewis is behind the artwork which is part of his new exhibition ‘High Boltage’ at Y Galeri.

Mr Lewis inspected the work on Thursday afternoon and discovered all of its pieces were intact and has now repaired the damage.

He said: “I’ve put him back together again. He had been bashed about a bit and knocked sideways under the water. Somebody has either had a good wrestle with it or maybe last year’s monster was feeling out of place?”

Not that I support vandalism or any type of law breaking, can you really blame them? It's hideous and an eyesore.
