Get Caerphilly Online helps 3,000 use the internet

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:09, Friday August 2nd, 2013.

Thousands of people in the county have brushed up on or developed new Internet skills thanks to the Get Caerphilly Online campaign.

In the last three months alone, nearly 500 people have been given opportunities to get online, whether they are starting from scratch or just improving their digital skills.

That means the campaign has helped 3,000 users to date.

The Digital Friday’s scheme – currently operating in libraries in Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Risca, Rhymney and Ystrad Mynach – offers advice and support to people who want to learn more about the internet and what they can get from it.

Cabinet member Councillor Ken James said: “This is excellent news and a reason to congratulate the staff and volunteers who deliver this fantastic scheme to our residents.

“The Internet is becoming an increasingly important tool for communication, shopping for goods and services, job searches and for access to public services.

“I am also pleased that other local authorities are following our lead by embracing the Digital Friday’s initiative.”

Digital Friday’s success will see the scheme extended to additional libraries across Caerphilly county thanks to the commitment of the “Digital Champion” volunteers and the positive support of the library service.
