Organisers of this year’s Megaday music festival are hoping to hit a £250,000 milestone in their fundraising efforts.
Now in its 19th year, the annual music festival is being held on Sunday August 25. Since it began, it has raised more than £233,000 for Velindre Hospital and organisers are making an extra special effort to get to the £250,000 mark.
Megaday is held each year at Caerphilly Rugby Club’s Virginia Park ground in memory of local musicians Andrew Nichols, who was known as Mega, and Paul Grahame, who both lost their lives to cancer.
Until his death in 2001, Paul had played at every Megaday with his band PG and the Tips and had also played a major role in organising the festival.
Steve Sullivan, one of the Megaday organisers, said: “Megaday is a fantastic event that gives people the opportunity to enjoy a great day out while supporting a great cause too.
“For anyone who has been touched by cancer, it’s a great way to celebrate the lives of lost loved ones whilst making a real difference to those who need it.
“Megaday has bought Velindre much-needed equipment, such as beds, and has also helped build a children’s playroom to help comfort the stay of young patients at Velindre.
“We usually raise around £15,000 a year at Megaday, but we’re working extra hard this year to try and raise £17,000 as we would love to make the total donated figure £250,000.
“It would be a huge achievement that we’d all be very proud of.”
This year 11 acts will take to the stage including Bargoed’s 4th Street Traffic, the Love Handles and tribute acts to Tom Jones and the Foo Fighters. There will also be a new DJ area as well as inflatables and attractions for children.
Gates open at 1pm on August 25, admission is £10 per adult and free for children 12 and under.
