Aneurin Bevan Health Board and Gwent PCC each launch their own apps

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:12, Tuesday September 17th, 2013.

The Aneurin Bevan Health Board has launched an online medical app for use by the general public.

The app uses content developed for use by clinicians and adapts it for patients to carry out their own self assessment, via a series of questions, and guides them to the most appropriate level of care or place of treatment for their condition.

Dr Peter Thomas, lead GP for the Out of Hours Service, said: “We hope that this exciting development will help patients  choose and access the best service to meet their needs first time and in an appropriately safe time frame.”

It’s not just the health board that has launched its own app – the Office of Gwent’s Police and Crime Commissioner also has one.

The app provides residents with an interactive look at the activities of Gwent PCC Ian Johnston and his office.
The app has five main sections explaining what the PCC does.

Paul Harris, the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “It is really important that we stay current and use the most popular ways of communicating with the people of Gwent and this is a great example of the commitment we are making to do this.

“The app is straightforward to use and provides a welcoming and easy to use online environment for people to find out more about our work.

“We will continue to use other tried and tested methods of communication, but I think launching the app and running that alongside our website, Twitter and Facebook pages we are reaching a whole new audience.”

The app is available in English and Welsh and was developed by the Gwent Police Digital Communications department.
The app is only available on iPhones, but there are plans to launch it on other devices.

Let me predict what this app will cause.

Someone will follow the stages and a misdiagnosis will be given and someone with a serious condition will be lead to believe it's not serious. It happens now with a real doctor so it will increase with a virtual doctor.

Second, someone will follow the questions and the app recommends for a doctor to be seen just to be safe and the demand on GP's is not reduced.
