Launching Chinese lanterns from council-owned land has been banned.
A motion banning the use and sale of lanterns was passed by councillors this week after they were told several had started fires in the past.
Cllr Andrew Lewis, who represents Crumlin, drafted the motion.
RSPCA Cymru welcomed the decision of Caerphilly County Borough Council.
Its ruling extends to all land owned by the local authority, including public parks, and follows the passing of a motion at a full council meeting earlier this week.
In October, the Minister for Natural Resources and Food wrote to local authorities in Wales encouraging them to introduce a ban.
Chris O’Brien, RSPCA Cymru’s Public Affairs Manager, said: “We very much welcome this announcement from Caerphilly Council, which is good news for local wildlife, livestock and other animals.
“RSPCA Cymru has long called for a Wales-wide ban on the use of sky lanterns. Given the vast dangers associated with their use, we hope all local authorities in Wales follow the lead taken by those who have introduced such important measures.”
Stupid and ineffective. The majority of lantern are launched from private land. Many council houses are built on private land. Lanterns will still be launched and the fires still caused.
Dean is correct, why bother issuing this press statement. Council please put your house in order regarding the pay scandal before pretending that you can reduce the launching of Chinese lanterns by even one spluttering, damp and dim effort.
