Awards for Pengam Strolelrs walkers’ group

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:00, Monday January 13th, 2014.

A walking group set-up by Caerphilly County Borough Council has held its annual awards evening.

The Pengam Strollers was the first healthy walking group established by the council’s countryside service and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in 2005.

It is now run by the community as a constituted group.

The Pengam Strollers gave out a variety of awards, including Let’s Walk Cymru Volunteer of the Year, an award that is related to the whole Healthy Walking Scheme, won by Byran Moore; Let’s Walk Cymru Walker of the Year, won by Julie Mayho; and Most Improved Walker, won by Daryl Hardcastle.

There were also some alternative awards handed out, including the Fair Weather Walker of the Year and the Tea and Coffee Maker of the Year.

A special presentation also took place, for Pengam Stroller’s longest running volunteer.

Valerie Williams, 80, was the first volunteer on the Healthy Walks in 2005 after undergoing cardiac rehabilitation and is still one of the most active members.

She takes part in every walk held by the group and is one of ten trained Healthy Walks leaders who volunteer to lead walkers.

The Pengam Strollers Group meet every Thursday at 11am in the car park beside the river on High Street, Pengam.

The walk takes place on tarmac paths within Pengam Country Park and is suitable for any ability or fitness. The walks last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the individual walkers’ abilities.
