Pupils at Risca Primary School have secured their third Eco School green flag.

To get the award, environmentally-conscious pupils carried out a number of green initiatives that impressed Eco School assessors.

Miss Robyn Wilford, Year 2 teacher and Eco School co-ordinator at Risca Primary School, said: “We’re immensely proud of the pupils for the hard work they have carried out to achieve this award. The Eco Schools programme has empowered our pupils to make real changes, both at school and at home, and live greener lifestyles.”

Improvements by the pupils included working with the local community to develop a bog garden comprising a meadow area and bird boxes, as well as establishing recycling areas within the school.

A ‘Healthy Lunchbox’ week was also held where children were encouraged to eat healthy lunches, while the school’s eco committee ran ‘Tasty Tuesday’ fruit and vegetable tasting days. Nursery pupil Cagla Kaya, four, won a national prize for her healthy lunchbox design as part of National Obesity Awareness Week.

The school’s other improvements include adopting a snow leopard through the WWF.
