New Caerphilly town library attracts almost 20,000 visitors

News | Gareth Hill | Published: 15:00, Friday February 21st, 2014.

Caerphilly town’s new £5 million library has attracted almost 20,000 visitors since it opened its doors last month.

Since January, 19,399 visitors have passed through the doors to take a look at the multi-use building, which houses a museum exhibition space, a council customer service payment point and dedicated learning spaces. Some 6,777 people paid a visit to the new library in its first week – which is just shy of average visitor numbers for the whole of January at the old Morgan Jones site.

Book and non-book loans at the new building during January reached 13,168 issues, of which 5,805 were to children and young people – up on last year’s issues which totalled 9,338 including 2,733 to children and young people.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “I’m thrilled to hear that so many people are visiting the new library and utilising the services available,

“It’s particularly pleasing to hear that issues of books and other media are so high. I’m sure this building will continue to be an asset for the community for many years to come.”

The library is also set to be the new home of a public front desk for Gwent Police officers.
