A 51-year-old man has been charged with possessing an explosive substance, following a ‘bomb’ scare in Risca.
A second man arrested in connection with the incident has been released without charge.
On Tuesday March 4, a bomb disposal unit was called to Risca Police Station.
Officers had examined a “bag of fireworks” handed into them on Monday which had raised concerns.
A Gwent Police spokesman said the Explosive Ordnance Disposal were called as a precaution to make an assessment, and attended Risca Police Station at 3.30pm Monday where the items were being securely stored.
The EOD decided that the items were of a suspicious nature and a controlled explosion was carried out on Tuesday.
The delay was down to the fact the controlled explosion need to happen in daylight hours for safety.
A 100m cordon was put in place as a safety precaution and houses within it were temporarily evacuated.
Police said The items have now been sent to a forensic laboratory for tests to determine exactly what they were.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Ian Roberts said: “I’m very grateful to local residents and businesses for their patience, understanding and support during what must have been a worrying time.
“We apologise to anyone who may have been inconvenienced during the time when the cordon was in place, but hopefully people will understand that everything was done in an attempt to minimise any risk of injury to the public.”
Two men from the Newport area were arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive article in suspicious circumstances.
A 51-year-old has been charged and is due to appear at Newport Magistrates’ Court today while a 50-year-old man has been released with no further action.
