South Wales East AM Lindsay Whittle has challenged the Welsh Government to introduce a ban on smoking in cars carrying children.
During First Minister’s Questions, on March 25, Plaid Cymru’s Mr Whittle asked what action the Welsh Government was taking in the wake of a report which showed public support for such a ban to be imposed.
Mr Whittle, who is a member of the Assembly’s health committee, said: “Eighty-two percent of the public in Wales have agreed that smoking in cars carrying children should be banned and the same percentage said they would comply with a ban if one was introduced.
“The UK Government – after pressure from Labour members of the House of Lords – will be introducing legislation next year and the signs are that the Scottish Parliament will do likewise. What possible reason is there for your government to drag its feet on this issue?”
In response the First Minister said the Welsh Government would review the results of a survey it commissioned in the summer and then look to legislate if the findings were found to be robust.
