SAFETY: Local children have joined the campaign to have a road barrier

Children have joined a campaign for a road barrier to protect their homes, after two cars ploughed through garden fences in two years.

The children sent letters and posters to Caerphilly County Borough Council as a campaign continues for a safety barrier to be erected on Caerphilly Mountain Road to protect houses on Cwrt Nant Y Felin in Castle View, Caerphilly.

Mother-of-four Rhiannon Williams began the campaign after reading about the latest crash on the road, which happened in January, in Caerphilly Observer.

Two cars crashed through her fence into her back garden in 2011 and 2013.

The medical secretary launched a petition, signed by more than 1,100 people and has won support from Caerphilly Town Council who pledged to make a donation towards any future barrier.

Mrs Williams said: “All the children in the street were aware of the second crash, as it was a warm sunny afternoon when the accident happened. They were all playing metres away from where the car destroyed the fences.

“The noise and smoke which filled the air from the crash is something they will never ever forget.

“They wanted to send their own message to Caerphilly Council as they have seen their parents working so hard to try to persuade the council to erect a barrier to protect their gardens so they can play out once more and feel safe.”

The campaign has also won the support of Labour councillor for Morgan Jones, James Pritchard, who said: “It’s not the case that the money is not there as when you have a budget of £3m, it’s a matter of where the money goes.

“The fact is if another accident happens, that could have fatal consequences and I’m not prepared to put a price on that.”

Caerphilly Observer understands that £42,000 has been budgeted for safety barriers but the council has prioritised other sites over the “medium risk” Mountain Road.

Cllr Tom Williams, Member responsible for Highways, said: “We have got problems all over the borough. Some communities want double yellow lines, some want a Pelican Crossing and others want road barriers.

“We need to look at the criteria and we will do what we can to make sure people are safe. I am meeting officers soon and will pass the petition and pictures from the children on to them.

“I completely understand the concerns, and so do the officers, so we will see what comes out of the meeting.”
